CommunityWise Members Memo
1. Head’s up…rent increase in 2017
In order to cover increasing operating costs, CommunityWise will increase the rent in January of 2017. Previous to this year we have had our utilities subsidized by the City of Calgary but in 2016 we are required to start paying full price for water and electricity. The last increase in rent was in 2013 after no increases since 2008. We are in the process of calculating equitable rent increases and will inform all tenants of exact amounts ASAP. It is our hope that giving members as much advanced notice as possible will help you to prepare for the increase in your projected 2017 budgets. CommunityWise welcomes your questions and input on this and any issue. Get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 403-261-9660.
2. Basement construction update
CommunityWise staff and 16 member participants completed a major participatory research project called Collective Action and Sharing Space Across Difference: a Participatory Case Study at the Old Y Building. Thank you and congratulations to all co-researchers: Erin, Phil, Jani, Dianne, Amanda, Seth, Jian and Tigist and participants; Corinne, Curtis, Dion, Ernesto, Fleetwood, Gerald, Gurbir, James, Kelly, Laura, Mitiku, Mussie, Ranjene, Sharon and Tony. Your contributions are already benefiting the community. The research was conducted as part of Son Edworthy's Masters of Arts degree in Human Geography. The research report will be posted on the CommunityWise website and the full thesis document is available to read in hard copy at the CommunityWise admin office.

6. Participate on the programming committee!
One of the committees within the CommunityWise committee structure is the programming committee. This committee plans CommunityWise’s community development planning with representation from the membership. Meetings take place about once/month. 7. Volunteer opportunity for accountant!
Please forward widely>>>>
If you or anyone you know is a certified accountant and you are interested in a wonderful volunteer opportunity please get in touch! By helping CommunityWise improve our accountability, you are actually helping all of our over 70 nonprofit member organizations who rely on our services to do the good work they do.
CommunityWise is looking for a chartered accountant to help us with oversight of our books, specifically to go over the set up of our new Quickbooks accounts. Jian Hong, our current finance coordinator, has an accounting certificate from SAIT and is extremely capable and competent with our Quickbooks system, however CommunityWise lacks an accountant on staff or on the board for higher -level oversight of finances.
A qualified candidate would:
-have experience with non-profit accounting
-be able to volunteer 5 hours of time in the month of March 2016 (hours could be spread over 2 or 3 sessions; could work from home)
In the long term we are also looking for an accountant to serve on the CommunityWise Board of Directors, but in the meantime a one-time volunteer position will help us immensely with our current operations.
If you are interested please contact Jian at firstname.lastname@example.org. Taking applications until position is filled. Thank you!
